Tom Lowndes, more commonly known as Hot Dub Time Machine is back at the Adelaide Fringe for the world premier of RECLINE. Joined by jazz saxophonist Matt Keegan, RECLINE is an immersive music experience. The show features performance on four decks, live music accompaniment and stunning visuals. This is a slight departure from Hot Dub’s previous styles of show, partially due to this being a seated performance. However, the relaxed atmosphere of RECLINE is perfectly suited to this.
For me, the most prominent feature of RECLINE was the clever use of so many different samples. An array of music and audio samples are included, from artists such as Bjork, Bill Withers and John Lennon. The samples are layered together and transitioned between. I also really enjoyed trying to identify all the different samples! Simultaneously, Kreegan’s live saxophone performance adds another layer of sound. Kreegan alternates between alto and soprano saxophone, sometimes imitating sounds, and at other times adding phrases.
RECLINE definitely felt more like an experience, as opposed to an ordinary concert. The ability which music has to transport the listener is on full display. Throughout RECLINE you are transported through time, a variety of music eras and differing emotions.
There are only two more shows of RECLINE this Fringe season, so whether you are a Hot Dub Time Machine Fan, or a music fan in general, it is not to be missed.
