Adelaide Fringe Review 2021: The Illest

Who: Yasemin Sabuncu
Where: Howling Owl
When: Until 20 March
Tickets: here

This Adelaide Fringe, Yasemin Sabuncu is the illest. Her illness is chronic, but she remains iconic as she shares her ten year battle trying to get diagnosed with endometriosis and later ADHD. Amongst this, we follow her on her experience with Ayahuasca, her obsession with Keanu Reeves, and her life-threatening jilt with a bucket bong.

Yasemin is a natural comic. She has a knack for pulling her life experiences together in a very funny way. As her debut show, her nerves are showing, but this doesn’t detract too much from her charm.

While funny, the Illest is dealing with serious issues: for a chronic illness that 1 in 9 people assigned female at birth face, doctors really are clueless when it comes to diagnosing and understanding endometriosis. It’s unbelievable really that medicine is still so far behind in this area.

It’s early days for Yasemin and as she’s freshly returned from study in LA with some of the big names in improv, you just know she’s gonna explode.

3 out of 5 stars
