Last time Endless Grooves ran a party, it was the marvellous Dream Boat: Party on the Popeye, back in the era when we could still dance in enclosed little spaces. This December, the idyll continues in the great outdoors. Adelaide’s funkiest music collective is bringing the party to the almond orchards of Papershell Farm with Utopian State, a three-day musical picnic packed with live music, DJs, market stalls, food, and wine. Expect to enjoy the best of South Australian talent in a relaxed, all-ages setting embodying the leisurely vibes of long summer days between Christmas and New Year.

Situated in the foothills of Willunga and overlooking the beautiful coastline, Papershell Farm is one of McLaren Vale’s last remaining organic almond orchards. Custodians Surahn and Jessica Sidhu are teaming up with Nick Gencarelli (also known as underground disco DJ Fantastic Black Plastic and the head of Endless Grooves) and Jordan Jeavons (formerly of Happy Motel and responsible for the Here’s to Now festival at Coriole) to host the three-day event. “A shared love of soulful music, quality audio, tasty local eats and drinks in a relaxed environment has led to something pretty special,” says Jeavons of the collaboration.

Musical goodness will be spread over two stages delivering a rollicking variety of grooves sure to please all punters. The DJ tent will boast a quality custom soundsystem by Condesa Electronics and showcase the talents of SA’s finest vinyl selectors including Medhi, Jura Soundsystem, Nan, Felicity, Danvers, Troy J Been, Oisima, Say Wat Collective and Ezroh & Dental Jams. Gencarelli will also bring his DJ expertise to the event as Fantastic Black Plastic. Meanwhile, nestled amongst the leafy almonds trees, the main stage will host a brilliant line-up of local acts. There’ll be soulful hip-hop vibes from Elsy Wameyo, Terveste Collective and Nu Article, jazz musicians Adam Page and the Josh Baldwin Quartet, Afrobeat band Shaolin Afronauts, Cuban-influenced beats from Sergio Mimosa y su Sexteto Bing! Bang! Boom!, the eclectic grooves of Slowmango, lush alt-pop group Quartz Pistol, and more.

The bountiful harvests of local wineries and producers will be on offer, including Big Easy Radio, Never Never Distilling Company, Year Wines, Golden Child, Delinquente, Frederick Stevenson, Adventure Time, Swell Brewery and Bizarro Aperitivo. Food will include offerings from Ergo Pizza, Mangia Mangia and Soza’s.

“I think this will be a really magical way to send out this crazy year on a high note!” says Jeavons — and goodness knows we all need an excuse to celebrate after the chaos of 2020. Utopian State promises to be a perfect way to bring in the good vibes for the year to come.
