Maps are skilfully used as a backdrop in Laura Wills’ ecologically centric and people focused artworks. In our latest spotlight, Laura tells us of her many local art affiliations, and her favourite food group.
Q: Hello Laura! Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
A: I am a visual artist based in Adelaide. I work in an expanded arts practice, across disciplines, collaboratively, and on participatory and community art projects. This year I am an associate artist with Open Space Contemporary Art (OSCA). I also work 1 day a week at Tutti Arts as a support Arts Worker. I am a member at Central Studios, represented by Hill Smith Gallery, and I am a mother of 4 year old twins.
Q: Who inspires you? What inspires your art?
A: Social and ecological art projects inspire my art. Investigations into travel, shelter, environment, mapping, and food issues. Country inspires me, and Indigenous connection to it through language, culture and story.
Q: Do you have a preferred medium?
A: Hmm, tricky question maybe drawing. This means drawing in sand and with light etc. not just pigment.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Raw earth, connection, environment, people and rainbows.
Q: Can you please describe your artistic and creative process i.e.: from lingering idea to putting it into practice?
A: What is the context, who am I working with, what is the background, what research needs to be done. What are the initial concepts. Begin developing ideas and testing them. Making things, trials, discussions, research, more research, more doing, and making.
Q: Where do you see your art practice taking you in the next five years?
A: Working collaboratively to create works about place, old stories, and our connection to it.
Q: If you could recommend one artist, who would it be?
A: I loved being introduced (online) to Rebecca Mayo the other day. Walking has become increasingly central to her practice, similar to artists like Richard Long. And I love Sarah Rodigari‘s work, Strategies for Leaving and Arriving Home, where she walked between Melbourne and Sydney.

Q: If you had to eat one food group for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A: I would say fruit. Because of coconuts. The king and queen of fruit, durian and mangosteen are also pretty special. Local (to South Australia) fruits persimmons, white sapote and fegios are also amazing.
