To the textural pleb (me), wood is wood is wood. To furniture and product designer whiz, Timothy Wilkinson, there is Tasmanian Oak, American White Oak, Huon Pine, Mango Wood and a million different types of timber surfaces to work with. In our latest spotlight, Tim heaps praise on local furniture design guru, Khai Liew, and talks about his plans for the future.
Q: Hello Tim! Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
A: Hello Collage! I have always been interested in how things are made and the function they provide, especially furniture. I like to imagine different ways to make everyday objects and attempt to reinvent them in an original way. I am studying Product Design this year at UniSA and I am really excited to bring some more ideas to life.
Q: Who inspires you? What inspires your art?
A: I am inspired by geometric forms and the need for functional furniture. Green Cathedral Bespoke Furniture is one of a few success stories that encouraged me to pursue my own design goals.
Q: Do you have a preferred medium?
A: Mostly timber – Tasmanian oak, American White oak, and Huon pine. Whatever I can get my hands on! I am also experimenting with resin and concrete.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Contemporary, functional, minimal
Q: Can you please describe your artistic and creative process i.e.: from lingering idea to putting it into practice?
A: When I get an idea, it is usually only for a feature or even just a technique, then I start sketching and prototyping, and work out how I can apply it to a piece of furniture or object to make something remarkable. That is the goal anyway!
Q: Where do you see your art practice taking you in the next five years?
A: I see myself as a prominent furniture designer known for innovative designs, influencing consumer trends away from throw-away furniture towards sustainable, functional furniture.
Q: If you could recommend one artist/designer, who would it be?
A: It will have to be Khai Liew. His style is so refined and everything he makes is something special.
Q: What is your favourite gallery?
A: Aptos Cruz! They are always changing and have lots of innovative products and furniture.

A: I have a website, and I’m also on Instagram.
Q: If you could be Prime Minister of Australia for a day, what would you do?
A: I wouldn’t change much, Australia is a great place to live! I would probably update the furniture in Parliament House, though.
