How many visual artists have skilfully (and tastefully) incorporated Beyoncé into their artworks? Carly Snoswell has. A self-confessed Beyoncé nut, Carly successfully combines various textures and fabrics with Sasha Fierce’s indomitable presence. In our latest spotlight, Carly lists her preferred mediums, and what famous piece of architecture she would live in.
Q: Hello Carly! Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
A: Hi there! I am an Adelaide-based artist who loves sequins and beads, Beyoncé, The Simpsons and Port Adelaide Football Club. I am Co-Director at FELTspace, Artist Assistant at Pom Pom (an arts initiative facilitated by Carclew) and a member of Holly Rollers Studios.
Q: Who inspires you? What inspires your art?
A: I’m inspired by my friends and family, and all the kids at Pom Pom. I also love throwing myself into various fan communities.
Q: Do you have a preferred medium?
A: Right now, I am working with many different textile construction techniques such as embroidery, weaving, knitting and sewing. I love fabric and working with threads.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Like an obsessed teenager’s bedroom. Or a cool nana who loves Beyoncé.
Q: Can you please describe your artistic and creative process i.e.: from lingering idea to putting it into practice?
A: I rarely have a specific trajectory. I usually begin making and experimenting with materials and techniques and see what ideas form from there. I use a lot of the fan communities I participate in as the base for my subject matter as well.
Q: Where do you see your art practice taking you in the next five years?
A: Hopefully everywhere, I am about to start my Masters at the South Australian School of Art, so who knows where after that. As long as I’m making and teaching art, I’ll be happy.
Q: If you could recommend one artist, who would it be?
A: Local it would have to be Sera Waters as she’s an absolute textile superstar. I recently had the pleasure of working with Teelah George from Western Australia during her exhibition at FELTspace and completely fell in love with her tapestry work, she’s definitely one to watch.
Q: What is your favourite gallery?
A: FELTspace because I live there. But also because it gave me my first solo exhibition and countless opportunities.
Q: Where can we find more of your work?
A: I’ll have some work in a group exhibition at SASA Gallery coming up soon, as well as another group show during SALA Festival at Holy Rollers Studios. You can also see some snippets of my work on Instagram and my website.
Q: If you could live in any famous piece of architecture, what would it be?
A: Donald Judd’s old apartment in SoHo. I was lucky enough to go on a tour and it was just the most incredible and beautiful space I’ve ever walked through.
