I have a lot of hobbies that some people would probably consider a guilty pleasure. I love crappy TV shows, I watch New Girl on the reg, and I love frozen pizza, something my ancestors probably roll in their graves for. But, as far as music goes, there’s a new monthly party that assures me that I am not weird for getting into disco music. In fact, it probably shouldn’t be considered a guilty pleasure at all.

DISCO Is Not A Dirty Word does exactly what the name suggests and changes every opinion you ever had about disco music. Get over the flares and the deep-necked silky shirts of the 70s because disco has so much more to offer. Launching over the weekend at Renew Adelaide bar Biggie’s at Bertram, DISCO Is Not A Dirty Word is an all vinyl disco party, created to unite people from all over Adelaide under one groove, as it did in the infamous New York clubs of the 70s. The night encompassed all branches of the genre including funk, soul, and boogie.  Resident DJs Nick Gencarelli and Duncan Lawry provided the perfect mix of sing-a-long anthems and deeper, under-appreciated cuts to keep everybody’s feet moving all night long.

Biggie’s takes you back to the Supermild of olde, hidden away in the basement of a heritage building on Grenfell Street, it has a cosy dance floor, dim lighting, and even offers Cooper’s long necks. This provides the perfect atmosphere for sipping on a selection of local beers and wines whilst busting questionable dance moves to some great music.

The current disco revival in Adelaide has been heavily influenced by the opening of another Renew Adelaide space, Paradise Loft Records.  It’s a record shop located in Regent Arcade with a broad selection of music, which has been a primary source for the musical curation of the night. This emphasises how Renew Adelaide spaces have been instrumental in providing physical locations within the CBD to foster many forms of local culture.
